Baldur’s Gate 3 clears 470,000 players in 24 hours

Baldur’s Gate 3, the latest RPG from Divinity: Original Sin developers Larian Studios, has nearly half a million players less than a day after its launch. The game first launched for PC users via Steam on August 3, 2023.

As of press time, less than 24 hours have passed since the game was unlocked. Despite that short period, hundreds of thousands of players launched and played their first sessions of the game. The numbers come courtesy of SteamCharts, which measures player counts for games hosted on Steam. screenshot taken by Josh Tolentino

At its peak, 471,897 “concurrent players” – players running the game via the Steam launcher at the same time. As of press time, the number of concurrent players had decreased to just over 282,000. This drop was likely owed to the fact that August 3 and 4 are still work- and schooldays in most parts of the world.

Completing The Trilogy

Baldur’s Gate 3 launches as a long-in-the-making follow-up to two legendary RPGs: Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn. First released in 1998 and 2000 on PC, the Dungeons & Dragons-based RPGs helped usher in an entire era of video games based on tabletop RPG systems.

Players’ love for the titles helped catapult developers like BioWare and Black Isle to great fame, and to this day, many see the Baldur’s Gate duology as some of the greatest games of all time.

Despite sharing a title and setting with the original Baldur’s Gate games, Baldur’s Gate 3 is significantly different. Much and more has happened both in the real world and the game’s Forgotten Realms setting in the intervening years. Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rule set, whereas the first games used the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition rules.

The new game’s narrative is also set more than a century after the conclusion of the original games. As such, it’s not directly connected to their events, and centers on a new crisis brought on by the Illithid – tentacle-faced extradimensional creatures also known as Mind Flayers.

Players begin the game infected with a Mind Flayer “tadpole”, a parasite that threatens to devour their brain and replace it with that of a Mind Flayer. Escaping captivity, they must find safety, as well as a way to treat the potentially terminal condition.

Though it’s not directly connected to the original games, Larian Studios confirmed that some familiar Baldur’s Gate faces appear in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Among others, the Ranger Minsc and Druid Jaheira play roles in the story. Players who encounter them may get the chance to recruit them as party members, depending on their actions.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PC via Steam. A PS5 version is set to launch on September 6, 2023. An Xbox Series X|S version is in development, but does not have a confirmed release date.
