Jagged Alliance 3 Console Release Date Confirmed for November 16, 2023

Developer Haemimont Games and publisher THQ Nordic have confirmed the console release date for strategic mercenary RPG Jagged Alliance 3.

The follow-up to the all-time PC RPG classic will be playable for owners of the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on November 16, 2023.

To promote the upcoming release, Haemimont Games trumpeted the specialized adaptations made to Jagged Alliance 3 to make it comfortable and convenient to use with contemporary console controllers. The company posted detailed breakdowns of the control layouts on the official YouTube channels.

Here’s the Jagged Alliance 3 console control guide for PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers:

For Xbox controllers, Haemimont produced this guide.

The 7-minute control tour focuses on lightly introducing players to the basic controls of Jagged Alliance 3, as they’ve been fully adapted to the control scheme of consoles.

Tactical RPGs like Jagged Alliance 3 tend to receive a mixed reception on consoles, as many games have complex user interfaces derived from interaction using the mouse and keyboard.

The results have been hit-or-miss, with successes like the XCOM series matched by notable misses like the PlayStation 3-era flop Stormrise. As such, it makes sense that Haemimont would promote the game’s specialized adaptations to make the experience palatable to console players.

What Makes Jagged Alliance Special?

Jagged Alliance 3 will likely be many console owners’ first experience with a series that has deep roots in the PC strategy RPG scene, and is beloved by many older players.

Originally released for DOS and Windows in 1994, the Jagged Alliance follow bands of mercenaries as they conduct operations in warzones across the world.

The stories and settings of Jagged Alliance are heavily influenced by the aesthetic of classic, over-the-top 1980s Hollywood action movies, as well as the fictionalized exploits of mercenaries featured in magazines like Soldier of Fortune.

Thus, many of the characters in Jagged Alliance games are cartoonish caricatures of various Cold War-era pop-culture archetypes.

Each recruitable mercenary in Jagged Alliance has their own personality, as well as their own relationships with other mercs, which can affect their combat performance. Jagged Alliance 3 is no different, though it moves the setting from isolated Atlantic islands and Latin America to the fictional African country of Grand Chien.

There, the player’s mercenary outfit is tasked with combating groups of militants who’ve kidnapped the benighted nation’s president.

They’ll need to establish strongholds in the country, controlling territory and extracting resources to fund their operations, all the while fending off enemy attacks, and using their mercenaries in turn-based tactical battles.

Jagged Alliance 3 is available on PC, and will launch on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on November 16, 2023.
