Larval Tear Elden Ring Guide: How to Respec Your Character

Is your build just not as exciting as it once was? Slow weapon leaving you too vulnerable to gnomes with cleavers? Maybe you just got an awesome new weapon but picked the wrong stats to use it.

If you are looking for a way to reset your stat points and rebuild your character from the ground up without starting the game over, then you’re in luck. There is just one little thing you will need first.

But fear not; in this guide, I will walk you through the basics of how to reset your skill points and where to find the precious resource you’ll need to do so: Larval Tears.

What are Larval Tears?

Larval Tears are the byproduct of the creatures known as Mimic Tears. These silvery slimes are capable of changing shape and size to copy the forms of other creatures, including you! More importantly, larval tears are the resource you will be using to reset your character’s stat points.

This isn’t a commonly occurring resource, and there are a limited number of mimic tears in the game, so don’t expect to reset your stats every time you level up.

There are exactly 18 tears scattered throughout the Lands Between, which should be enough to satisfy your curiosity and let you try out a few different builds, so long as you don’t go overboard.

Where to Find Larval Tears – Limgrave

There is one Larval Tear in Limgrave, obtained by defeating a Mimic Tear disguised as a Wandering Noble east of the Agheel Lake South site of grace. This mimic is the easiest to reach at a low level but seems to move around and can be hard to pin down. Check near the edges of ruins for a noble with a sword.

You should be able to use the process of elimination as long as you do not rest at a site of grace or fast travel in between. Be aware that he won’t go down easy and will transform into a Runebear after you kill its human form, so be ready.

Liurnia of the Lakes

Lobster

One tear can be obtained by killing a tear disguising itself as a Giant Crayfish between the Rose Church and Boilprawn Shack site of grace. After defeating its crustacean form, the mimic will transform into a Grafted Scion, a dangerous enemy you probably recall from the very beginning of the game.

Graveyard of the Albinaurics

Another Larval Tear can be found in the graveyard near the Village of the Albinaurics Site of Grace. The village is located in a cavern underneath the mountains on the western side of Liurnia. For a walkthrough of how to reach the village, check out our guide on Nepheli Loux’s questline.

Caria Manor Graveyard

After reaching the end of the Caria Manor dungeon and defeating Royal Knight Loretta, you can head out of the moongazing area and turn right. Follow the path until you find a graveyard and search for a painting sitting on an easel. This is the resurrection painting, and finding it means you have also found a larval tear.

Pidia

Assuming they aren’t dead, you can purchase a single Larval Tear from Pidia, the Carian Servant, on the upper floors of Caria Manor.

Caelid

In the far corner of Caelid, on the cliffs to the southwest of the Caelid Highway South site of grace is a graveyard. At the back of this graveyard is a noble, kneeling and staring out to sea.

Your instincts are probably screaming for you to stab him, but if you do, he will transform into a giant troll with a flaming sword. Killing this troll will award you with another Larval Tear.

Altus Plateau

Amidst a set of unmarked ruins southeast of the Windmill Village site of grace, you can find a Wandering Noble cowering in the corner. Heartlessly murdering them will cause them to transform into a Lion Guardian. Subsequently, killing this monster will award you with a Larval Tear.

Mt. Gelmir

Near the Road of Iniquity site of grace, beneath a tainted Minor Erdtree is a crowd of Smoldering Corpses. One of these corpses is secretly a Colossal Wormface waiting to interrupt your killing spree with a shower of disgusting death goo. Killing Wormface will reward you with a Larval Tear.

Consecrated Snowfield

Want to see something funny? Head to the Inner Consecrated Snowfield site of grace. Make your way southeast through the fog to find a Wandering Noble helplessly buried in the snow while his friends try to dig him out.

If you take advantage of the situation and attack the buried guy, the game will punish you by transforming him into a large Runebear. On the bright side, this Runebear drops a Larval Tear when killed.

Nokron, Eternal City

Abandoned Merchant

Near the ancestral ruins in Siofra River there is an Abandoned Merchant who will sell you a single Larval Tear. You can reach him by climbing the scaffolding near the ruin walls.

Silver Gazebo

Just northeast of the elevator leading to Nokron from Limgrave (or southeast of the Nokron, Eternal City site of grace) is a gazebo with a corpse in the center. This corpse has a Larval Tear on it. Just be cautious when you approach, as the ceiling of the shelter is covered in Silver Tears waiting to drop onto your head.

Abandoned Building

Very close to the gazebo mentioned above is a large abandoned building with Fallen Hawks Soldiers scrabbling about inside. The corpse at the back of the room carries a Larval Tear.

Mimic Tear Boss

To progress through the city of Nokron, you will eventually have to face the Mimic Tear. This boss will copy your character, including your skills, equipment, and stats. Facing off against yourself can be a real challenge, but defeating this foe will reward you with not one, but two Larval Tears.

Silver Sphere

Defeating the Silver Sphere located at Night’s Sacred Ground will earn you a Larval Tear

Nokstella, Eternal City

All three of the Larval Tears in Nokstella are obtained by defeating Silver Spheres. Yes, I am referring to the sentient death boulders. What you probably thought was just part of a trap just changed directions and knocked you off a bridge.

These things are fast, deadly, and frustrating. But they are rather easy to kill if you can get them in the right position. The greatest weaknesses of a Silver Sphere are walls and doors. Getting the sphere stuck in a doorway is an easy way to get rid of them, as long as you don’t get too close.

There are three in Nokstella and one in Nokron (mentioned above). Each one will drop a Larval Tear the first time you kill it.

You can find Nokstella’s Spheres:

  • At the large bridge leading from the stairs to the city
  • Dropping from the ceiling of the hall filled with silver tears north of the bridge
  • Pretending to be a statue in the center of the ballroom northwest of the bridge

How to Respec Your Character

Once you have a Larval Tear in hand, it’s time to put it to use. To respec your character, you will first have to defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, and recover the Great Rune of the Unborn. Rennala resides at the heart of Raya Lucaria Academy in Liurnia.

Once you have defeated her, Rennala can be found sitting in her chair at the center of her boss room, still clutching her weird egg. Now when you speak to her she will offer you “rebirth.

This will reset your stat points and allow you to spend them again. She will also give you the option to change your character’s cosmetics, essentially reopening the character creator from the start of the game.

If you wish to respec, accept rebirth, and you will be taken to the level-up screen. The process is pretty straightforward, your character will be reset to starting level and you can spend your points again until you are back to your current level.

Note that you must use all of your stat points before leaving this screen and cannot reduce a stat to lower than when your character started.

For example, the Warrior class starts with a dexterity score of 16, so you cannot reduce their dexterity to lower than 16. Additionally, you cannot reduce your character to a lower level, as you must spend all of your available points to be reborn.

Each rebirth will cost you one Larval Tear, and you can respec as many times as you like as long as you have Larval Tears to spend.

FAQs

Question: Does Cancelling Rebirth Cost a Larval Tear?

Answer: No. Larval tears are only consumed on completion of rebirth, meaning all points are spent and you accept the changes.

Question: Do Cosmetic Changes Cost a Larval Tear?

Answer: No. Cosmetic changes can be done by Rennala for free as many times as you like.

Question: Is there a Way to Get more than 18 Larval Tears?

Answer: Not without New Game+. Larval Tears are considered a key item and therefore cannot be dropped or traded in multiplayer.
