Elden Ring Smithing Stone Guide

If you have trouble with a boss in Elden Ring and feel you are adequately leveled, the problem may lie in your weapon. While finding a counter to the boss can be helpful, upgrading your weapon is a crucial part of combat in Elden Ring. Each weapon needs one of two types of Smithing Stones to upgrade.

What Are Smithing Stones In Elden Ring?

Smithing Stones are upgrade materials in Elden Ring that allow you to strengthen your armaments. Each armament has different stat scaling, but they all do more damage when upgraded. You may wonder why the numbers I mentioned regarding how many are found in the wild are a guestimate. Well, in Souls games, it takes players ages to see everything.

There’s a good chance that some stones still haven’t been found. There’s also a chance that the next patch will move some around, changing the number even. So it’s better to stick with an estimate rather than a set number.

Don’t worry; every Smithing Stone, aside from the Ancient Dragon one, can be farmed. You can either farm them from specific enemies or buy them from Twin Maiden Husks. But more on that later.

Smithing Stone Cost From Vendor (each) Number Found In The Wild Number Needed To Level Total Cost For Specified Smithing Stone Total Cost To Level Armament From 0

Smithing Stones Vs. Somber Smithing Stones

ring

Smithing Stones and Somber Smithing Stones are two different materials that upgrade different armaments. The Somber Smithing Stones are used to upgrade special weapons. Legendary weapons, boss weapons, and other unique weapons require Somber Stones. But the type of stone isn’t the only difference. To upgrade your weapon with regular Smithing Stones, you need 12 of each stone.

But when you upgrade with Somber Stones, you only need one of each. However, you can only upgrade a weapon to level 10 with Somber Stones. In contrast, you can upgrade them to level 25 with regular Smithing Stones. This may be because the Somber Stones are used for powerful weapons that would be too powerful if upgraded to level 25.

Somber Smithing Stone Cost From Vendor (each) Number Found In The Wild Number Needed To Level (to next stone) Total Cost For Specified Smithing Stone Total Cost To Level Armament From 0

Where To Upgrade Weapons In Elden Ring

If you want to upgrade your weapons, there are a few options, and it all depends on how far you are in the game. So far, there are three methods, but more may be added in future patches.

Smithing Table

smithing table

  • Location – Church of Elleh (Limgrave)
  • Upgrade Limit – +3
  • Sells – Nothing

The first time you upgrade your weapons, it should be at the Church of Elleh. A small anvil in the corner allows you to upgrade your weapons to +3. This is helpful early game, but you won’t rely on this method for long, as you can only use Smithing Stone (1) with it.

Blacksmith Iji

  • Location – Kingsrealm Ruins (Liurua of the Lakes)
  • Upgrade Limit – None
  • Sells – Somber Smithing Stone [1], Somber Smithing Stone [2], Somber Smithing Stone [3], Somber Smithing Stone [4], Carian Filigreed Crest

Iji goes by many names. While he is a blacksmith, he is known as war Counselor Iji, and he plays a massive part in side quests later on. He can upgrade your armaments all game and even sells a few Somber Smithing Stones. While the first two stones are unlimited, you can only buy three of the other stones. The Talisman he can sell you (after completing a specific quest) lowers the FP consumed by skills.

Smithing Master Hewg

This is my sole source for upgrading armaments. Smithing Master Hewg is one of the only NPCs at Roundtable Hold that never leaves his spot. He’s there, working as a servant day-in and day-out. So he is always there to upgrade your weapons. While he doesn’t have a shop, he can do a lot, including buying your junk and duplicating Ashes of War. I suggest you make friends with Hewg early because you will likely visit him every day.

Where To Find All Smithing Stones In Elden Ring

The regular Smithing Stones can be found throughout the map. Each of them has a unique farm. But you can also buy them from vendors and find them from looting bodies, chests, and random objects. There is a lot to cover here, but with this guide, you can find every single Smithing Stone that has been discovered and shared by players.

Smithing Stone [1]

Smithing Stone [1]

The first smithing stone is what you’ll need to upgrade your weapons to +3. This is the most common Smithing Stone in all the land, but you will also need more of them than any other if you prefer to upgrade many weapons at once.

Where To Find All Somber Smithing Stones In Elden Ring

Somber Smithing Stones are rare in the world. They are needed for special weapons. Thankfully, you only need one per upgrade for those special weapons, so it’s okay that the stones are more difficult to find.

FAQs

Question: Can You Upgrade Armor In Elden Ring?

Answer: No, you cannot upgrade armor in Elden Ring. You can, however, alter garments at any Site of Grace. This changes the stats slightly and the visual of the armor.

Question: Can You Buy All Smithing Stones In Elden Ring?

Answer: You can buy an unlimited amount of every Smithing Stone and Somber Smithing Stone aside from the Ancient Dragon ones. You just need to unlock the Bell Bearing and turn it into Twin Maiden Husks.

Question: How Do I Farm Smithing Stones In Elden Ring?

Answer: You can farm most smithing stones by finding the enemy that drops them. However, if you have the runes, it may be better to buy them. You can find a good rune farm and use your time to farm runes rather than stones.

Why Learn About Smithing Stones In Elden Ring

Smithing Stones are an important part of the game. Without them, your weapons would be very weak, and bosses would be even more difficult than they already are. While it may be a lot to take in, it doesn’t take long to learn the ins and outs of Smithing Stones and how to use them in Elden Ring. You get to keep them for Journey 2 (NG+), so feel free to collect them all the first time around and be ready to upgrade more weapons (like boss weapons) for Journey 2.
