Intro: Mythology in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s accurate mythology would make even the most stringent history teacher proud. Each detail of the Greek gods is represented through iconic statues, temples, and appearances throughout the epic cycle. There are also references in conversations that give you an authentic vibe.

Playing Odyssey is like stepping into a historical time machine and witnessing the majesty of the Greek world with its exciting mythological imagination. Each God has a particular power, role, and relationship with other figures in the universe.

Kronos is mentioned multiple times, and my goal is to educate you about his elusive role in Odyssey. He isn’t expounded on that much, but here you will understand who Kronos is and how he fits into this exciting masterpiece! This game features epic Gods/Titans that inspire creative thought and give you a true educational twist that is rare in games. Let’s go back in time and explore the rich facets of Greek mythology through the eyes of Kronos!

Bottom Line Up Front

Kronos is the Greek Titan who castrated his father, Uranus, and became the supreme ruler of the universe for some time before being defeated by his children. He has impressive strength and wields power over time. He can also communicate with animals and has superior intelligence. At different points, Kronos is referenced in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but he isn’t featured in the game itself.

Who is Kronos in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey?

While playing the game, you might wonder who Kronos is in Odyssey because he is eluded to throughout your adventure. First, he has name variations in Greek mythology, including “Kronus” or “Cronus.” They speak of the same deity, so you don’t get confused.

Here, we will refer to him as he appears in the Assassin’s Creed Universe as Kronos. His father is Uranus, and his mother is Gaia. His story is well-known throughout the Greek world, most notably, the blatant castration and usurping of his father by force.

Kronos then married Rhea and had some children you will probably recognize. Historically, Kronos was worshipped as the head of the Titans and had control over the intricacies of time. Kronos had a slew of unique abilities that set him apart from others, including his power to communicate with animals. His immense strength was similar to Hercules’, and he was brilliant in securing his position as the most powerful God and supreme Titan Deity.

Under his rule, it was considered the golden age for men with limited laws and lavish celebrations. He was also considered the most potent and greatly feared God before he was dethroned. Ancient artwork portrays him as an older man with a sickle or possibly a sword in some instances. Here is a list of Kronos’ Children, which are also featured in Odyssey:

  • Demeter: Olympian Goddess of the Harvest
  • Poseidon: God of the Sea, storms, and Earthquakes
  • Hades: God of the Underworld
  • Hera: Goddess of the family and marriage
  • Hestia: Goddess of the home, state, and Hearth

The Unique Mythology of Kronos

Strap yourself in because this roller coaster will get bumpy regarding the mythology of Kronos. You might first feel like the castration of Uranus would be a terrible thing to do to your father, but there is an important context to consider.

Tartarus

His father was considered a tyrant and summoned a hundred-armed Hecatonchires along the terrifyingly brutal one-eyed Cyclopes into the underworld realm of Tartarus. It wasn’t like Kronos woke up one day and randomly thought, “I can’t wait to castrate my own father.” No, it’s much more convoluted than that because of the immediate threat Uranus imposed on Tartarus through his reckless actions and need for celestial dominance.

Gaia hastily took action by forging a flint sickle and then inquired with her children to address the issue by attacking their father Uranus. However, they were too frightened to deal with the matter, except for Kronos. He wielded the sickle, cut off Uranus’ testicles, and cast them into the sea. This was a bold exchange of power whereby Kronos effectively transcended his father as the new brave ruler of the underworld.

One notable fact is that this castration would ironically lead to the birth of Aphrodite, the goddess of fertility, lust, passion, and beauty. There was a prophecy in place that predicted that Kronos himself would also be overthrown by his offspring as he did to his father in a poetic twist.

It turned out that Kronos was equally vicious as his father because he attempted to stop this from happening. In a desperate move, he devoured his children as they were born to prevent the prophecy from happening. However, Rhea gave birth to the well-known Zeus in a secret location without Kronos knowing. She gave her husband Kronos a decoy stone in place of the child.

Driven by a lust for securing his position of power, Kronos has no idea that he devoured a stone and went about his business in the underworld with a false sense of security. Zeus grew up strong and was soon capable of confronting his father and freeing the rest of his siblings from his stomach.

From there, they led a significant rebellion and defeated Kronos to become the well-known legendary twelve gods of Mount Olympus. Rhea is the true hero of this story because of her cunning wit against a power-hungry tyrant. Here are the twelve Gods of Mount Olympus who were freed from the belly of Kronos and defeated him:

Heritage and Influence in Assassin’s Creed

Within Elis, in the sanctuary of Olympia, a statue was erected titled “Kroniun,” which depicts Kronos relentlessly and gruesomely devouring one of his children, staying true to the mythology. Within Odyssey, Kassandra wields a dagger she obtained from a Kult of Kosmos member with the name of Kronos on it. She also received a set of armor that was attributed to Kronos.

This is appropriate since she can be seen as a loose antagonist throughout the game. The armor honors the once mighty Titan Kronos, who was taken down through cunning deception. Odyssey features a simulation of the underworld where there is a treasury in remembrance of Kronos. This can be found within the scorched lands located in Tartaros. Odyssey is well-known for using its unique name variations of historical versions to give it a special appeal.

The Powers of Kronos from Greek Mythology

Kronos has many daunting and impressive powers, which Assassin’s Creed Odyssey doesn’t mention. According to the lore, he is an incredibly formidable Titan Diety with strength that transcended all the others. His children were only able to defeat him through collective effort and deception instead of a head-on assault. Had they not caught him by surprise, it would have been a different story.

These abilities prove why they were so afraid to confront him. Here are some of the powers that kept him solidified as the ruler of the universe for a time. There were very few who would dare oppose his authority and supreme control. Kronos, the King of the Titans, had the following abilities:

  • Chlorokinesis: The Kinetic Manipulation of Plants & Vegetation
  • Chronokinesis: The ability to manipulate all facets of time & age
  • Psychokinesis: The control of motion and inanimate objects
  • Teleportation: Instantly transporting to other locations
  • Atmokinesis: The ability to control the weather & storms
  • Immense Titan Physiology: He was physically enormous and towering
  • Unparalleled physical strength
  • Shapeshifting: The ability to transmute into a plethora of unique forms
  • Physical Regeneration: The ability to heal rapidly
  • Invulnerability: Resistance to physical attack and the elements
  • Immortality: Endless life span & permanent existence
  • Enhanced Charisma & Heightened Social Skills
  • Heavenly Lordship & Leadership Cognition

If you buy the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Deluxe Edition, it will come with two free packs. One of the featured sets of armor is called the Kronos Gear Pack. Each armor piece has three perks that enhance your abilities and a viable slot for engraving at a blacksmith.

You can equip the armor once you reach level five, which will be the same as any other set you acquire. If you don’t favor the appearance of the helmet, then it can be nullified in the menu.

Does Kronos physically appear in Odyssey?

Image from Assassin’s Creed Wiki

Unfortunately, Kronos doesn’t make a physical appearance in Odyssey outside the references in weapons, conversations, and locations. However, he is still an essential thread in the fabric and enriches the story with his unique, timeless lore.

He was the God of time with all the power before Zeus was born on the scene and changed the course of history. Kronos plays a diminished role in Odyssey and is overshadowed by the other mythological gods like Hades in the DLC.

The only physical representation of Kronos in this game is the statue, where you can see him committing the heinous act of devouring his children. Nevertheless, the game gives you enough to make his presence known as a prominent figure from the past.

Conclusion

Kronos is an interesting supreme titan diety that dared to dismantle his father, but he was also afraid of losing his power. This led him to commit some disturbing acts to prevent a damning prophecy from occurring.

Overall, I would like to see more of Kronos in Odyssey, but sometimes less is more because it’s difficult to cover each facet of Greek Mythology. It’s interesting to discover that Zeus wasn’t always the most powerful God, and it took strength and courage to gain that position through the defeat of Kronos.

Much of the lore focuses on the twelve Gods of Mt. Olympus, but it also pays homage to Kronos as a crucial mythological figure. The lack of information on Kronos adds to the mysterious quality of his nature, and hopefully, you have a much broader perspective now while playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey!
